Treverlen Park was the site of two schools, which had served their communities well but needed replacement. Securing their replacement was a complicated administrative dance, resulting in a new High School on Milton Road and a compact new primary school on the site of the old High School. Every change was vigorously opposed, but the final result has been close to a triumph.
A ludicrous 9 storey high school, on a plateau of bungalows, has been replaced by modern and unobtrusive buildings on Milton Road, leaving fond memories of pupil cameraderie but no nostalgia for the tormenting tower – where the top two floors were unusable.
St John’s School was built for 600 pupils up to the age of 14, opened in 1923 for Roman Cathlolics pupils and run by nuns. Its replacement is a warm, open, learning village.
The land left was also fiecely debated, with a demand for a skate park which was accepted, to be surrounded by wild land with little play area.
